LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS/SPAIN, 11 November 2018 - The Lanzarote edition of the Melges 40 Grand Prix season has officially come to a close, as the tenth race has been run and the results are finalized for the 2018 ranking.

Despite winning the Lanzarote Grand Prix yesterday and successfully, automatically defending his Grand Prix Championship title for a second time, Alessandro Rombelli’s STIG (Francesco Bruni, tactician) won the final heat today soaking up a sweet victory in the Melges 40 Class.

“We are really delighted to have achieved our goal of the season, and that was to defend our Grand Prix title for a second consecutive time,” said Rombelli. “We did this thanks to a very well structured program. In regards to every single detail, our crew did an excellent job giving us the best performance. We didn't start the season very well, so we were always racing uphill and chasing the leader, but in the end we completed our work to the fullest.”

As for the remaining podium positions, they have been officially decided. Taking an ‘all or nothing’ approach, Yukihiro Ishida at the helm of SIKON (Manu Weiller, tactician) gave a stellar performance to confirm his second place position on the ranking podium.

That podium is completed with Richard Goransson’s INGA (Cameron Appleton, tactician) seated in third, who up until August proved to be the strongest, and indeed unbeatable.

In fourth place overall is Valentin Zavadnikov’s DYNAMIQ SYNERGY (Michele Ivaldi, tactician), followed by Andrea Lacorte at the helm of VITAMINA CETILAR (Gabriele Benussi, tactician) in fifth.

The Melges 40 Grand Prix circuit counts on the support of Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, and local partners Calero Marinas and Lava Charter.

Rombelli Conquers 2018 Lanzarote Melges 40 Grand Prix

Rombelli Conquers 2018 Lanzarote Melges 40 Grand Prix

LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS/SPAIN, 10 November 2018 - Congratulations are in full order for 2018 Melges 40 Lanzarote Grand Prix Champion Alessandro Rombelli at the helm of STIG. Racing alongside was tactician Francesco Bruni, with crew members Giorgio Tortarolo, Daniele Fiaschi, Iztok Knafelc, Luca Faravelli, Martino Tortarolo, Pierluigi De Felice and Pietro Mantovani.

“We are happy to have won the regatta, and excited about winning the Grand Prix as well,” said Rombelli post racing. “This was the goal of the year for us. We had a tough start to the season, but the boat has been great. We sailed very, very well this week.”

It was a true ‘moving’ day for Yukihiro Ishida’s Melges 40 team SIKON (Manu Weiller, tactician). A drastic improvement in the daily results catapulted him from fourth overall to the runner-up spot on the podium. His daily result of a 2-1-1 proves that he can do it too, hence the fleet’s very balance attitude when it comes to tough competition.

Proudly standing on the podium in third, Andrea Lacorte’s VITAMINA CETILAR (Gabriele Benussi, tactician) ends 2018 on a high note. Touted all season long as the Class rookie, Lacorte and his band of brothers are rookies no more. They confirmed that they have the ability to divide and conquer as they have captured their first Melges 40 bullet, a true diamond in their scoring portfolio.

Seated fourth and fifth overall respectively is Valentin Zavadnikov’s DYNAMIQ SYNERGY and Richard Goransson’s INGA. Of the two teams, Goransson seemed to struggle the most with only one light of brightness today when he and his team won Race Seven.

The tenth and final race will be held tomorrow. It proves that, although it will not alter the name of the stage and circuit winner, it will decide the podium of both Lanzarote and the entire Melges 40 Grand Prix Series.

Rombelli Champions Day Two at 2018 Lanzarote Melges 40 Grand Prix

Rombelli Champions Day Two at 2018 Lanzarote Melges 40 Grand Prix

LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS/SPAIN, 09 November 2018 - With six races complete at the 2018 Melges 40 Grand Prix in Lanzarote, Alessandro Rombelli's STIG (Francesco Bruni, tactician) has extended his lead in the most impressive manner. A seemingly unstoppable 1-1-3 daily result keeps him in the event lead, five points ahead of second place finisher Valentin Zavadnikov's DYNAMIQ SYNERGY (Michele Ivaldi, tactician).

With only four more races to be contested, Rombelli has moved even closer to confirming and successfully defending his Melges 40 Grand Prix Championship title.

In comparison to Day One, the much breezier conditions (20 knots) played to Rombelli's advantage giving he and his team the opportunity to add more bullets to their scoreline. His worst result yet is a third, and that was discarded after the sixth race.

Rombelli also continued to extend his points lead as well, a stark contrast to Richard Goransson's INGA. With only four races left, Goransson's work is clearly cut out for him as he and his team must find a way to advance and capitalize on any mistakes made by Rombelli, all in the interest of retaining their leadership of the 2018 ranking.

Everyone will be watching the remaining podium positions currently occupied by Zavadnikov, and Andrea Lacorte's VITAMINA CETILAR (Gabriele Benussi, tactician) respectively, second and third with 12 points each.

Japan's Yukihiro Ishida's SIKON (Manu Weiller, tactician) trails with 16 points.

The Melges 40 Grand Prix circuit counts on the support of Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, and Melges Europe.

Three Within One Point: Lanzarote To Decide 2018 Melges 40 Grand Prix Champion

Three Within One Point: Lanzarote To Decide 2018 Melges 40 Grand Prix Champion

LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS/SPAIN, 06 November 2018 - The most anticipated event of the 2018 Melges 40 season officially gets underway on Thursday, November 8. With all the right ingredients in place, the 2018 Melges 40 Lanzarote Grand Prix will be a guaranteed racing showdown.

After three events (a season that commenced in Palma de Mallorca last May), three very capable teams are positioned at the top, but only one can take home the crown.

Leading the 2018 ranking is Sweden's INGA helmed by owner Richard Goransson (Cameron Appleton, tactician). For most of the season, Goransson dominated with great success at the Class' first two events in Palma, then went on to win the One Ocean Grand Prix hosted by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda this past July.

All things changed at Copa del Rey as Alessandro Rombelli's STIG (Francesco Bruni, tactician) brought Gorannson's march on success to a screeching halt. After a tough start to the season, Rombelli managed to change gears in Palma and in one fell swoop, closed the gap that separated him from leader. He is second overall, dead even in points with Goransson.

Seated third and also very much in contention to win the 2018 title is Japan's Yukihiro Ishida sailing SIKON (Manu Weiller, tactician). They are the only team standing on the podium lacking a first place event win, but if he can capture it in Lanzarote, it could spell victory for him on the Melges 40 circuit.

Valentin Zavadnikov racing DYNAMIQ SYNERGY (Michele Ivaldi, tactician) will be looking to score his first event win in the Melges 40 Class, a result that has eluded him on several occasions.

The same goal applies to Italy's Andrea Lacorte aboard VITAMINA CETILAR (Gabriele Benussi, tactician). Although 2018 has him marked as a rookie, he and his team, in a very short period of time have proven they are on an upswing by winning the final race at Copa del Rey last August.

Ten races are scheduled on the waters of Arrecife, starting on Thursday and completing on Saturday, November 10.

The Melges 40 Grand Prix circuit counts on the support of Helly Hansen, Garmin Marine, and Melges Europe.

2018 GRAND PRIX RESULTS (PRELIMINARY - After Three Stages)
1.) (SWE) Richard Goransson, INGA; 1-1-5 = 7
2.) (ITA) Alessandro Rombelli, STIG; 4-2-1 = 7
3.) (JPN) Yukihiro Ishida, SIKON; 3-3-2 = 8
4.) (MON) Valentin Zavadnikov, DYNAMIQ SYNERGY; 2-5-4 = 11
5.) (ITA) Andrea Lacorte, VITAMINA CETILAR; 5-4-3 = 12
